Tips on Framing Page 3

Finishing the framing.

Putting artwork into frame

Carefully slide in the glass. At this stage, I would clean, again, the inside surface of the glass. Next slide in the matte board with artwork. Lastly here, cut a piece of clean cardboard as a back and slide in behind the matte board.

Attach last section

Fit on the last section, tighten corner screws, add the springs to under the edge rails at the back, between the cardboard back and the frame back rails. Add hanger wire. Place felt pads at back bottom corners. Clean front glass. Do not allow window cleaner fluid to bleed between the frame edge and glass. This could get picked up and bleed into the matte.

Finished look

It used to be a thing to do, thirty or forty years ago, to triple matte under the glass. I've been told, recently, that isn't needed these days. Double matte if you wish by cutting another board with a window up to 1/2 inch less margin all around the window. Some framers glue this to the first matte board underneath. It's fun to experiment with the look. It demands another consideration of choosing the correct accent color.
